android icecreamMy Galaxy Nexus S 4G recently got the long-promised Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update. It is so much better with the latest version of Android that I would never go back to an older version. Of course now my Nexus S 4G is old hardware, so it’s not the dream phone it could be. Not many phones have ICS yet, and even though there are more Android phones out there than anything else, those wanting the best are out of luck.

That is the ultimate problem with Android. There are too many phones to choose from, but few of them have everything that tech-savvy buyers want. If you find an Android phone that is just what you want, with the latest version of Android, odds are it’s not available on your U. S. carrier of choice.

An article on Techfanatix sums up the situation nicely. The Gadget Mom, a friend of mine for a good while, voices her frustration with the “too much choice, yet not enough” situation. We both like Android, but getting it in the form and package we want is far too often out of reach.

android-logo2IPhone users love to brag about their phones. They line up around the block and stand in line for hours when a new one is released. Yet, for many users, Android is clearly the superior platform. Yes, its Achilles' heel is a big one: security. Android's openness and large market share mean that it's a juicy target for attackers.

Yet, Android's openness also provides serious benefits. It allows for more customization; its apps are usually cheaper and various handset manufacturers are able to offer significantly different form factors, such as the smartphone-tablet hybrid, the Samsung Galaxy Note.

With a little tweaking, you can speed up and optimize Android in ways that will make iPhone users' heads spin. Here are 10 ways to make Android faster, more productive and more secure than iPhone.

flipboardThe Galaxy S III may be scheduled for release as early as May 29th in Europe and whilst it boasts a few interesting exclusive applications, an XDA user by the name of "Valcho" was able to rip the Flipboard news application and share it with the rest of the world prior to the Galaxy S III release date.

Flipboard combines the most popular news posts in categories which the user selects on the first use of the application. Flipboard is even able to find news from Facebook and Twitter and incorporates relevant posts into the respective feeds. The ripped application does work on other devices and we can confirm that the application isn’t tied to the Samsung Touchwiz framework.

Flipboard can be found on the XDA Developers Forum where the thread owner states that he will most-likely try and rip more applications such as S-voice at a later date should he get a hold of the Galaxy S III again.

samsung-galaxy-s-iii-2Samsung one-upped itself and gave the Galaxy S III one of the biggest displays available for smartphones. It's the latest example of a trend by iPhone competitors to push larger screen sizes to differentiate themselves. The first Galaxy S phone had a 4-inch screen, and Samsung moved up to 4.3-inch on the SII. The S III, with its 4.8-inch screen, or the HTC One X's 4.7 inches, dwarf the iPhone, which has had a a 3.5-inch since 2007.

With Android phones getting bigger every year, how big can they get until they are simply too big to use as phones? Many people already find 4.3-inch displays too big to operate with one hand, and the "bigger is better" philosophy could bite back at Samsung and other iPhone competitors. At this rate, next year we could see a display larger than 5-inch (similar to the Galaxy Note), which will be big enough to cover your face while you’re on the phone. If this trend continues, you could be sporting a 7-inch tablet as a phone soon.
