win7 phoneMicrosoft wants to make Valentine's Day a very happy one for two lucky people in the US. Today on the Windows Phone blog site, the company announced that it will give away two Windows Phone-based devices via its Twitter page tomorrow. The contest is open only to legal residents of the United States.

In order to win the contest, Twitter users must sent out one of the following two messages. One of those messages requires that users "tweet a 'Dear Droid' breakup letter with the hashtag #DumpingMyDroid." This sounds similar to a previous promotion where users were asked via Twitter to give their best "Droid Rage" story.

The other message will let users say how much the love a Windows Phone or how much they want to love with the hashtag #ILoveWindowsPhone. Microsoft will pick the two winners at random. In addition to getting a new Windows Phone-based device (the contest rules don't state which smartphone from which company you will be getting) you will also get a new Zune Pass for a year as well as free year of Xbox Live Gold.

Could happen. Maybe... if you believe in witches and goblins that is.

Microsoft's Windows Phone will overtake Apple's iOS in terms of smartphone operating system market share by 2015, IHS iSuppli forecasted Tuesday. The industry research firm believes the partnership between Microsoft and Nokia will help propel Windows Phone from just a 1.9 percent share of the smartphone market last year to the No. 2 spot behind Google's Android in just a few short years.

windows-phone-concept"With the introduction of its critically acclaimed Lumia 900, Nokia has set the stage to regain some of its lost smartphone market share—and to re-establish Microsoft Windows Phone as a leading contender in the cellphone operating system (OS) business," IHS analyst Wayne Lam wrote in a January research note that's making the rounds this week.

Cool... now all they need to do is actually release it and then get people to buy it.

A video of Microsoft's plans for the Windows Phone 8 operating system has apparently been leaked and is now making the blog rounds, analysts say.

Tech site PocketNow, which obtained a copy, says the video hosted by a corporate vice president of Windows Phone program management was intended for Microsoft's partners at phone maker Nokia, The Seattle Times reported Friday.

Among the features highlighted in the video are support for multicore processors, new screen resolutions, removable microSD card storage and NFC radios for contactless purchase payments, PocketNow said.

Bitchen... right?

Windows Phone 8 will be based on the same kernel as Windows 8, and will support multicore processors, NFC, and full device encryption according to a leaked video seen by PocketNow. This in turn inspired Paul Thurrott to reveal a little more about the software too. In the video intended only for internal consumption by Microsoft and its partners, Joe Belfiore, director of the Windows Phone program, describes the extensive features that Windows Phone 8, codenamed "Apollo," will contain.

Addressing widespread concerns about Windows Phone's mid-range hardware specification, Apollo will support processors with up to four cores, four different (and unspecified) screen resolutions, NFC for contactless payment, and removable microSD storage.

In a move that will make Windows Phone a better option for enterprise users, Windows Phone 8 will include full device encryption, based on the same technology as desktop Windows' BitLocker encryption. Apollo will sport richer support for Exchange ActiveSync policies, and Systems Center inventorying and management. There will also be greater support for private deployment of custom line-of-business applications.

win7 phoneWhile technology enthusiasts are still wondering whether the next major Windows Phone version will be based on Windows 8 or the existing Windows Phone codebase, Microsoft this week did provide an answer to one important question: The company revealed that existing Windows Phone apps will indeed run on Windows Phone 8.

"Any app built today will run on next major Windows Phone version," Microsoft's Brandon Watson wrote on Twitter in response to a rumor from the usual Russian blogger suspects.
Watson, however, also added that Microsoft was "pretty clear about this" fact in its MIX'11 keynote address. I've scoured the keynote transcript but can't find that reference, so it must have been subtle indeed. But it seems unlikely that Microsoft would have even mentioned a Q4 2012 deliverable in a speech from April 2011, given that it was promoting its late 2011 release, codenamed Mango, at that time.
